Should You Remove the Bedding or Make Up the Bed Before Leaving as a Houseguest?

You close the door behind you, suitcase in hand, heart already halfway home—and then comes the oddly stressful question:

What do I do with the bed?

Do you make it?
Strip it?
Leave it exactly as it is?

It’s a tiny decision, but somehow it can say a lot about you.

Guests often wonder. Hosts rarely explain. And the “right” answer depends more on where you are, who you’re staying with, and how well you read the room than on any strict rule.

With close family or friends, you can usually keep things relaxed. If you’re unsure, simply ask:

“Would you like me to strip the bed, or would you prefer I leave it made?”

They may tell you not to worry about it—and that’s perfectly fine.

But in a more formal setting, such as a B&B, guest suite, or hosted rental, stripping the sheets and placing them neatly in one spot can be a thoughtful gesture. It quietly says:

“I know this creates work for you, and I appreciate your hospitality.”

For a short stay, leaving the bed neat and tidy is often perfectly acceptable. For a longer visit, stripping the sheets can be a considerate extra step—especially if that’s how the host prefers things handled.

Before you leave, take a quick look around for anything you might have forgotten. Leave the room reasonably tidy. And when in doubt, ask rather than guess.

Because good guest etiquette isn’t really about the bed.

It’s about respect, consideration, and leaving someone’s space the way you’d hope a guest would leave yours.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures say the biggest thank-you.
