My girlfriend came home after a walk with the dog. Attached to the dog’s fur, we discovered this. We’ve been…

The fear hit before the door had even fully opened.

Something pale and tangled clung to our dog’s wiry fur, shifting beneath the harsh kitchen light like some tiny creature that absolutely did not belong there. In an instant, our minds raced toward the worst possibilities.

Parasites. An infection. An emergency trip to the vet. Sleepless nights filled with worry.

Meanwhile, our dog simply wagged his tail.

We leaned closer, holding our breath. Our hearts pounded as that strange little clump seemed to become more terrifying with every second.

And then we saw it.

Not a parasite.
Not an infection.
Not a living creature at all.

It was a mangled pair of fake eyelashes—damp from the sidewalk, hopelessly tangled in his fur, and positioned with such perfect horror that our imaginations had done the rest.

The terror vanished in an instant.

We burst into laughter so suddenly and so hard that we could barely manage to pull the lashes free. Our dog just blinked at us, tail thumping against the floor, completely bewildered by the emotional hurricane he had somehow dragged home.

Later, when the adrenaline had faded and the house had grown quiet again, the whole ridiculous episode felt like a lesson hiding inside a joke.

We hadn’t panicked because of what was actually there.

We had panicked because of what we thought might be there.

That silly little clump of eyelashes reminded us how quickly the mind can transform shadows into monsters, ordinary things into threats, and uncertainty into fear.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is simply pause.

Look again.

Take a breath.

And give reality a chance to be less frightening than our imagination.
