I THOUGHT THEY WERE JUST CURIOUS DEER—UNTIL I SAW WHAT THE LITTLE ONE WAS CARRYING

They were wrong.

The fear didn’t come from the deer.

It came later.

It came after the photograph. After the jokes. After thousands of strangers online called it “magical.”

At first, I believed them.

I wanted to believe the deer were a sign—a moment of peace, some strange connection between me and nature. Something beautiful.

Then the messages started.

Then the calls.

Then the threats…

The first warning came from a stranger beneath the photo.

“You shouldn’t have looked back.”

I laughed it off. Some internet troll trying to scare me.

Then another account posted the same thing.

And another.

No profile pictures. No names. No history.

Just the same message.

You shouldn’t have looked back.

That night, my phone began buzzing nonstop.

Message after message.

Screenshots.

Photos of my house.

My barn.

My front porch.

Then one of my bedroom window.

I ran to the glass and looked outside.

Nothing.

Just the empty field stretching beneath the moonlight.

And the dark line of trees beyond it.

The next morning, the deer were closer.

They stood along the fence, perfectly still, staring toward the house.

Not grazing.

Not moving.

Just watching.

As if they were waiting for something.

I deleted the post.

Blocked every account.

Told myself it was over.

It wasn’t.

The calls started that evening.

Always from different numbers.

Always distorted.

Sometimes there was only breathing.

Sometimes a whisper.

They knew my name.

They knew things I had never posted.

And then, one night, a voice on the other end finished a sentence I hadn’t even spoken aloud.

“You invited us when you shared it.”

I haven’t slept properly since.

Because every evening, just before dark, the smallest deer appears at the edge of my yard.

It never comes closer.

It never makes a sound.

It just stands there.

Watching me.

And every night, at exactly the same time, my phone lights up with a new message from an unknown number.

Three words.

“Still watching.”
