Trump introduces new dramatic twist to his story about being rescued during 9/11

The claim is explosive. The evidence is nowhere to be found.

As America prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Donald Trump is once again placing himself at the center of the chaos surrounding Ground Zero — this time with a dramatic story of being carried to safety by two “big, strong” firefighters as the danger unfolded around them.

But there’s a problem: the story leaves behind almost no trace.

Reporters and fact-checkers have searched for the firefighters. No names have emerged. No photographs have surfaced. No official logs appear to confirm the rescue. And the witnesses who might be expected to remember such a striking moment have offered no clear corroboration.

The story is vivid. The record is not.

Over the years, Trump has portrayed himself as a hands-on figure during the aftermath of the attacks — someone who sent crews to Ground Zero, walked through the rubble and put himself close to the danger.

Yet the documented history of September 11 tells a far more complicated story.

Former officials and emergency responders have questioned whether an episode as dramatic as the one Trump describes could have happened without leaving some kind of record. In a disaster meticulously documented through thousands of photographs, radio transmissions, official reports and eyewitness accounts, the absence of corroborating evidence stands out.

And that is what makes the claim so striking.

Thousands of acts of courage from ordinary Americans have been documented and preserved in the historical record. But one of the most dramatic stories surrounding Trump’s own role remains unsupported by the evidence that reporters have been able to find.

As the 25th anniversary approaches, the question is no longer simply what Trump remembers.

It is whether the public should accept a powerful story when the historical record cannot substantiate it.
