A Terrifying Discovery Beneath a New Jersey Shed: An 8-Foot Python Hiding in the Shadows
The sound coming from beneath the shed was something no one expected to hear in a quiet New Jersey backyard. For Leslie and Ed Daley, the peaceful routine of life at their Freehold home came to an abrupt halt when they spotted a strange, patterned body lurking beneath their shed. At first, the sight was almost too bizarre to believe. Then came the horrifying realization: a huge, potentially dangerous snake was hiding just feet away from their home.
Animal Control officers rushed to the scene alongside a contractor, carefully lifting floorboards and working to free the powerful reptile. Every movement had to be deliberate. The snake was enormous, and no one wanted to risk injuring it—or themselves. Slowly, the officers maneuvered the python out from beneath the shed and into the daylight, revealing its astonishing size and unusually swollen midsection.

At the Monmouth County SPCA, veterinarians and rescuers took an X-ray to uncover what was inside the snake’s distended belly. The image revealed an astonishing discovery: a large opossum that the python had swallowed whole. The sight offered a chilling explanation for the snake’s swollen appearance and raised urgent questions about how the exotic predator had ended up in a residential neighborhood.
After being cleaned up and placed in a secure enclosure, the python was transferred to a licensed reptile expert. Meanwhile, authorities began searching for its owner and investigating how it had come to be living beneath a backyard shed.
For the rescuers, the incident was more than an unforgettable wildlife encounter.
